Our Story - Large Minority

My title

LARGE minority is a fresh travel movement dedicated to creating meaningful travel adventures. Our inimitable travel experiences are quite simply the ultimate road-tripping journey.

We believe that in order to become more local, we first need to understand what local life is all about. So when putting together our travel experiences we always respect the local people and their culture. We also try to master their local ways and customs.

It all began back in 2008 when Colombian Juan and Kenyan Julian fell in love with Sri Lanka. As the friends traveled around the tear-shaped island, they realized their passion needed to be shared. Smitten and inspired, they drew on their skills acquired from careers in travel, tourism and events to form LARGE minority.

In August 2009, four months after the country’s internal conflict came to an end, LARGE minority was ready to roll. Expectant road trippers climbed in their tuk tuk´s and set out on LARGE minority’s inaugural voyage around the spicy island’s spectacular interior and gorgeous coast.

The Lanka Challenge is a headfirst emersion in a new culture. The full-on combination of adventure, culture and discovery by three-wheeled tuk tuk proved to be a magic formula. On a 2009 jaunt in Asia, the pair was seduced again, this time by Cambodia, its kind people and the extraordinary Angkor Wat  proved irresistible. The next step was obvious and so the Cambo Challenge was born.

As the movement for meaningful travel built up steam, another Juan, also Colombian, joined LARGE minority. The team was now fully formed and took a new direction by heading to Colombia. For the Juans, this new adventure - under the name More Local - brings LARGE minority home. The team is all about being true to destinations, so in Colombia, they saddled up horses, hopped on Willys jeeps and paddled down the Amazon in canoes.

Wherever you find LARGE minority and however they travel, some things don’t change. LARGE minority always has the same goal of engaging, exploring and inspiring.

LARGE minority is passionate about all its destinations, they have all had troubled pasts and the team is proud to participate in their development. Whether it is Sri Lanka, Cambodia or Colombia, LARGE minority sets up projects with local communities to make a real, sustainable improvement to their lives.

In Cambodia, the group funds a water pipeline project, which will benefit more than 1,000 members of the Chambok Community. In Sri Lanka, LARGE minority works with people displaced by the internal conflict. The latest Colombian escapade - More Local - will fund a sustainable water management system for an Amazonian community.

Traveling and exploring is a privilege, which carries a responsibility, so LARGE minority contributes towards reforestation programs and incorporates eco-friendly initiatives in everything it does. For everyone involved, LARGE minority is more than a simple travel company. It exists to offer you an invitation on the ultimate road trip and provide you with life-changing experiences.

Together, we will become the LARGEST of minorities.
